South Zone Inter-University Badminton Tournament for Women 2019-20

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in collaboration with the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, Sports Board organised the highly esteemed South Zone Inter-University Badminton Tournament for Women from 2-5 December, 2019.  Two times South Asian Games Badminton Gold medalist Ms. Trupti Murgunde as chief guest formally inaugurated the South Zone Inter-University Badminton Tournament for Women at MAHE’s Marena Indoor Sports Complex. “I played with a lot of determination and went on to win many titles overseas. But one title, the national championship, kept eluding me always…Finally, in 2010, I emerged victorious…I urge you all to have the never-say-die attitude always and never give up. Of course, the Commonwealth bronze and the five South Asia Federation Games gold medals have kept me going. And, I am sure you too can do that,” Murgunde said. The tournament was conducted as per the Badminton Association of India rules adopted by the Association of India Universities and a total of 57 teams participated in the tournament. In the semifinal match, University of Calicut beat SRM University, Tamil Nadu (Score 2-1). In the second semifinal match, Jain University Bangalore beat Andhra University (Score 2-1). In the losing semifinal match, Andhra University beat SRM University (2-1). In the final round match Jain University Bangalore beat University of Callicut, Kerala (Score: 2-1). In the best of three matches (1st Singles, Doubles and Second Singles) Jain University, Bangalore emerged as champion in South Zone Inter University Badminton (W) Tournament  2019 – 20 and runner up was bagged by the University of Calicut, Kerala. Dr. H.S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor, MAHE, Dr. Poornima Balliga, Pro Vice-Chancellor, MAHE; Dr. Narnyana Sabhahit, Registrar, MAHE, Dr. Vinod Nayak, Sports Council Secretary, MAHE, Dr. Sobha M.E. Joint Secretary, Sports Council, MAHE; and Dr. Sridhar H., Director of Sports Education were present at the inaugural function. They were also present together with Shri K. Raghupati Bhat, Indian politician and member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, at the prize distribution ceremony.
