He has been associated with the Manipal Group since 1985 in various capacities in the Department of Medicine, KMC Mangalore, starting from Lecturer to Professor & went on to become Associate Dean since 2001 and Dean from 2011 for a decade which makes him longest serving Dean of KMC Mangalore with a perfect 10 record! Dr. Prabhu also has the unique distinction of being the first KMC Alumnus to occupy the coveted post of the Dean, KMC, Mangalore, and has achieved the distinction of being also the longest serving administrator of the college.
Born on 28th Nov 1958 in Mangalore, Dr. Prabhu is an alumnus of KMC Manipal/Mangalore of 1976 MBBS Batch with a distinguished career in both Undergraduate & Postgraduate (MD General Medicine. Gathered vast administrative experience quite early on, in the capacity of the Staff Advisor for the Student’s Council of KMC where he started looking after Student affairs and welfare from as early as 1995. He was appointed Associate Dean, student affairs of the college in the year 2001 under Dr HS Ballal as his choice and in recognition of the good work done for student welfare. Had the privilege of being UG at Silver Jubilee of KMC, Associate Dean at Golden Jubilee, and Dean at Diamond Jubilee of KMC. Also had the distinction of leading college at the unique Light House Hill @ 50 programs on 13-10-2017 which commemorated the 50 years of the iconic lighthouse hill building of KMC with felicitation of 12 Senior Professors who had witnessed the inaugural function of the building by the then Vice President of India Late V.V. Giri in the presence of our Founder Dr TMA Pai.
During Dr Prabhu’s time at the helm of affairs, KMC Mangalore has been consistently within the top 25 among declared ranks in the annual NIRF rankings for the 4 consecutive years starting 2018 till present.
Dr. Prabhu had been the youngest President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in 2003- 2004. He was given a citation as the best Secretary of IMA (DK) branch twice – in the year 1990 & 1995, an achievement which till date has remained unique. He was the President of the Association Physicians of India, DK Chapter in 2000-2001 and hosted a successful API conference in May 2001. He was the chairperson of the successful Karnataka State API Conference (KAPICON) 2013 when he was felicitated for Lifetime achievements.
The only Indian to have been on the International Advisory Committee of Global Education in Medicine Exchange (GEMx) an Initiative of ECFMG for Medical Student Exchange from 2012 to 2021 He has been a Rotary Foundation Scholar who visited Mexico as a member of the Rotary Group Study Exchange team in 1993 and was a Visiting Faculty to Loma Linda University, California, USA.
As a Member Of the IAMRA, (International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities from 2010 till date) he represented MAHE in its International Biennial conferences at Philadelphia (2010), Ottawa (2012), London (2014). With the networking done at these conferences with his International diplomacy he was responsible for getting Dr Emmanuel Cassimatis, President of ECFMG for the MAHE Convocation (2013), Dr Niall Dickson President of GMC of UK for MAHE Convocation (2016), Dr Joanna Flynn, President of AMC – Australian Medical Council for MAHE Convocation (2017), Dr David Gordon, President of WFME( World Federation of Medical Education ) for MAHE Convocation (2018 ), Dr William Pinsky, President of ECFMG for MAHE Convocation (2019 ), and Dr Peter Katsufrakis, President of NBME, US for the 2020 November MAHE Convocation. With his efforts, the Presidents of all regulatory bodies have addressed MAHE Convocations, which is no mean achievement for the Internationalization Pillar of MAHE’s IoE vision! for which he has contributed majorly.
