KMC Manipal Alumni
The Alumni Relations, KMC Manipal has been functional for over half a decade and has been offering its fellow alumni the support needed to stay connected, keep inspiring, and go on living the KMC vision. The cell was formed to keep the silken threads of attachments between the former students and the institution.
The alumni of KMC Manipal have always been a source of support and inspiration for the students and the staff of this college, with a long list of famous personalities in the field who have made the institution proud for years.
Our alumni have always come back to the institution to contribute in various ways. They often guide the current students and share their experiences in academics (via guest lectures and conferences – in person as well as virtual), provide mentorship opportunities, and often engage in reunion and alumni activities regularly. The Manipal Malaysia Alumni Association (MAAM) and the Manipal UK Alumni Association are two of the many international associations under the aegis of the KMC Manipal Alumni Association.
Numerous alumni have not just invested their time and talents for their alma mater, they have also given back in the form of financial aids and scholarships. In the year 2020 itself, we have raised Rupees 45 lakh from generous alumni which went a great way during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Our Prominent Alumni
Dato' Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie bin Sheikh Mustapha (born 27 July 1972) is a Malaysian orthopaedic surgeon and the first Malaysian astronaut. He launched to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz TMA-11 with the Expedition 16 crew on 10 October 2007. Sheikh Muszaphar flew under an agreement with Russia through the Angkasawan program, and returned to Earth on 21 October 2007, aboard Soyuz TMA-10 with the Expedition 15 crew members, Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov. He did his MBBS from KMC Manipal.
Dr. Kotturathu Mammen "K.M." Cherian (born 8 March 1942) is an Indian heart surgeon. He attended Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. He performed India's first coronary artery bypass surgery in 1975 at Southern Railway Head Quarters hospital, Perambur, Chennai. He is the founder of Frontier Lifeline Hospital, where he performed India's second heart transplant surgery in 1995. He also performed the country's first heart-lung transplant and the country's first pediatric cardiac surgery.
He was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1991, and was honorary surgeon to the President of India from 1990 to 1993. In June 2000, Cherian received a lifetime achievement award from Kasturba Medical College for contributions made to the field of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He received a Harvard Medical Excellence Award in 2005, through a panel organized by Harvard Medical School.
His name is engraved in one of the stones at Kos Island, Greece along with three other Indian surgeons, on the occasion of the 18th World Congress held by the World Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons held between 30 April – 3 May 2008. In 2010, Cherian became the first Indian to be designated president of the World Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons. In May 2016, Cherian was selected to be a member of the "Founder Circle" of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Rajasekharan P. Warrier is a pediatric hematologist-oncologist in Jefferson, Louisiana and is affiliated with Ochsner Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Kasturba Medical College Manipal. He performed his pediatric residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI., and completed two fellowships in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Children's Hospital of Michigan and Wayne State University in Detroit, MI and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Dr. Rajasekharan P. Warrier, who was the Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University for nearly three years. Dr. Warrier initiated several new projects during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University. The simulation lab, the only one of its kind in the county, was his brainchild. The palliative care programme and the volunteers service organisation, launched by him, have become quite popular in a short time.
Dr. H. Sudarshan Ballal was born in Udupi, a coastal district of Karnataka, India. He did his MBBS degree from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal in 1977 and won the Dr. T. M. A. Pai Gold Medal for the Best Outgoing Student for the year 1976. After completing his MBBS degree he went to the US for further study of M.D. His teachers in the US accepted his training in India very well and his three-year program was relaxed by a year and he completed his M.D. in just two years. After obtaining his M.D degree, he did his residency at Deaconess Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. He then pursued his Fellowship in Nephrology at St. Louis University Medical Centre, Missouri, USA.
Ballal is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Saint Louis University Medical Centre, Chairman of the Board at Stempeutics Research Pvt. Ltd., and examiner for the Royal College of Physicians London. He performed the first cadaver Kidney transplantation in Karnataka. In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Rajyotsava Award by the Government of Karnataka for his contributions to the field of Medicine. He was awarded an honorary FRCP (Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London) without having worked or trained at any of the hospitals in the UK. Dr. Ballal actively supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Ayushman Bharat Yojana campaign. Dr. Ballal is a member of the Consultative Group of Covid 19 fight. And provide supports to the Government to fight against Corona Virus.
Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil Parambath was born on 11 January 1977 in Kozhikode, Kerala, India. After his schooling, he pursued an MBBS at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, then obtained his MD in radiology from Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. He did his radiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. Vayalil is an Indian radiologist and businessman. He is the founder, chairman, and managing director of VPS Healthcare Group, and the vice-chairman and managing director of Amanat Holdings, a healthcare and education investment company. As of June 2019, Vayalil has a net worth of US$1.4 billion.
Dr. Darez Ahamed is a medical doctor turned bureaucrat who joined the Indian Administrative Service in 2005. As of May 2021, he is the Mission Director of National Health Mission Tamilnadu. He was honored by Prime Minister for Excellence in Public Administration for the year 2012-13.
Ahamed was born on 2 February 1977 in Manjeri, Kerala. He graduated in Medicine at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, and in 2005 joined in Indian Administrative Service. On being awarded the Chevening scholarship, he took study leave from September 2019 to September 2020 & did his Master of Science in Health Policy Planning and Financing at London School of Economics & London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Ahamed got trained as Assistant Collector under Collector T. Udhayachandran in Madurai District. During his training, he was keenly involved in the conduct of Panchayat elections as Pappapatti and other villages and contributed as a case study on good governance. He served as Sub-Collector in Devakottai Sub-division of Sivaganga District, Additional Collector (Development) in Madurai and Krishnagiri Districts, Joint Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) - Chennai North Division, and Deputy Commissioner (Works) of Chennai Corporation. In 2011 he became District Collector of Perambalur district He took several initiatives to develop Perambalur District, which had been having a low and declining per capita income. Later he served as the Mission Director of the National Health Mission Tamil Nadu.
Dr. Bhogaraju Ramana Rao is an Indian physician and cardiologist from Bangalore. He was born in Hyderabad. His parents belonged to the West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. Rao has been offering health care to rural people free of cost for the last 36 years. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2010 for his contribution to the field of medicine. Rao was Kannada thespian Rajkumar's consulting physician. Dr. B Ramnna Rao married Smt Hema a Delhi based on 25 Dec 1975. He also contributed toilet and drinking water in rural areas of 16 villages. He did his MBBS from KMC Manipal.
Dr. Kishore Mulpuri, (1988 MBBS Batch) is at present Professor & Head at the Department of Orthopaedics, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from January 2021 onwards. He is also at present the 76th President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.
Dr. Koh Kar Chai (1982, MBBS Batch) Dr. Koh Kar Chai Proud alumnus of Kasturba Medical College Manipal (Class of '82) is President-Elect (2020-2021) of the Malaysian Medical Association.
Dr. Avinash Kambadakone, (1996, MBBS Batch) - CT Service Chief, Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School, Medical Director, Martha's Vineyard Hospital Imaging. He is a radiologist in Boston, Massachusetts.
