Pattern of cervical dilatation in normal labour

The pattern of cervical dilatation during labour in parturients at Chandigarh was determined following a prospective partographic study of 100 normal labours. The mean duration of active phase was 8.52 years in nulliparas and 5.81 hours in multiparas (p< 0.01). the mean rate of cervical dilatation was1.23 cm/ hour in nulliparas and 1.86 cm/ hour in multiparas, without terminal deceleration as full dilatation of cervix was reached. Booked patients showed reduction in the durations of latent and active phases. The station of foetal head and cervical dilatation at admission significantly affected the course of labour.

Primary adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix: changing clinical profile

Proportion of cases with primary adenocarcinoma among all cases of cancers of uterine cervix was studied from 1984 to 1988. Significant increase in cases of adenocarcinoma was found during the period when compared to preceding 5 years (p< 0.02). The diagnosed cases were younger (41.83 ± 2.64 and 51.45 ± 9.88 years, p<0.001), and in early stage (19.4 and 11.7, percent) than the squamous cell carcinoma cases. The disease free status status at 6 month after therapy was significantly poorer in adenocarcinoma patients than in squamous carcinoma controls (9 and 19 of 31 case-controls).
Prevalence of antibodies to Chlamydia trachomatis among infertile couples

Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection was determined in 110 infertile couples using ELISA technique to detect IgG antibodies. The overall prevalence was 3.92%. Infertile women showed higher seropositivity of 5.45% than healthy fertile women, 2.85%. Among infertiles, 8.3% of women married for 10 years or more, 10% of those with secondary infertility, and 14% of tubal factor infertility subgroups were antibody positive and rates of prevalence were higher than in their respective comparable groups. CT antibody detection rate was twice more common in women than in men.
Congenital cyanotic heart disease due to single ventricle in pregnancy

The congenital cardiac deficit known as single primitive ventricle is a relatively rare anomaly. Only six patients are reported to have entered reproductive years and pregnancy. We report here another case.

A vast majority of human malignancies are aneuploid and DNA analysis has proven to be a powerful prognostic tool in a variety of tumor malignancies. Reports concerning the clinical value of flowcytometric DNA content analysis in squamous cell carcinoma of uterine cervix have been variable. Analysis of DNA pattern and relationship of flowcytometrically determined ploidy level and S-phase rate of cancer cells, with tumour grade and some of the prognostic determinants in carcinoma cervix is presented.
Doppler waveform patterns of the umbilical artery - Screening test for high risk pregnancies

Doppler assessment of umbilical artery waveforms using the peak systolic to end diastolic (S/D) ratio was used to determine if complications associated with impaired trophoblastic invasion of placental bed (i.e. pregnancy induced hypertension and intrauterine growth retardation) could be predicted. Values for S/D ratio of at least 4, 3.5 and 3 at 22-26, 30-32 and ≥ 37 weeks gestation, respectively, were found to be better predictors of such complications. Pregnancy induced hypertension could be predicted in 63% and growth retardation in 60% cases at 22-26 weeks of gestation.
A rare location of extra pulmonary tuberculosis- the vulva

While pulmonary tuberculosis is more common in the male, extra pulmonary tuberculosis commonly afflicts women and children. Tuberculosis of the vagina and vulva comprise only l-2% of all cases of genital tuberculosis. Hence, a high index of suspicion is mandatory, especially in developing countries, to diagnose vulva1 tuberculosis.
Serum minerals - Calcium, Magnesium, copper and Zinc in Pregnancy Induced Hypertension

Antenatal and postnatal estimation of serum minerals – calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc, were carried out in 50 cases of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH). Healthy normal pregnant and non-pregnant women provided the data for comparison. Patients with mild PIH showed significantly lower serum zinc and calcium levels; severe PIH group in addition had significantly lower magnesium estimates; values for copper were higher in pregnant and also in women with severe PIH than the other groups. Postnatal estimates of calcium, magnesium and zinc were no different from antenatal values in all the groups studied. However, the levels of copper were found to be higher in postnatal samples.
